Mayor's Minute on 2013 budget

Mat-Su—This week on the Mayor's Minute podcast, Matanuska-Susitna Borough Mayor Larry DeVilbiss gives an overview of an extensive list of subjects addressed at last night's Assembly meeting.

• The budget was adopted on Monday with a new areawide mill rate, 9.691— the same rate as last year except for the increase to pay for school and road bonds passed by voters last October. Mayor DeVilbiss submitted three vetoes, which were overturned. 

• How raising the exemption threshold on an inventory tax and streamlining business licenses will help business.

• An approval for a new Borough building annex for the public to assemble and workspace for employees.

• The Susitna Ferry

• Precast restrooms, nearly indestructible yet nice looking.

Mayor DeVilbiss on the adopted budget

This week on the Mayor's Minute, Matanuska-Susitna Borough Mayor Larry DeVilbiss announces the adoption of the Borough's budget for next fiscal year. The areawide mill rate is 9.918 and non-areawide mill rate is 0.489.

Mayor's Minute Solstice 2011

MAT-SU—This week on the Mayor's Minute, Matanuska-Susitna Borough Mayor Larry DeVilbiss touches on the first LEED certified Gold industrial building in Alaska right here in the Mat-Su, railroad issues, Talkeetna sewer and water rate hike vote, support for House Bill 88, a reconsidered and amended gravel extraction ordinance. The Mayor also gives thanks to Gov. Sean Parnell for supporting the Port MacKenzie Rail Extension with a proposal for a $110 million general obligation bond, and $20 million in the general fund for Borough voter-adopted road bonds. A busy night.

Mayor's Minute Supporting Coal Permit

In this week on the Mayor's Minute podcast, two excerpts of speech from Matanuska-Susitna Borough Mayor Larry DeVilbiss are posted here from the lengthy meeting last night. Hundreds of residents turned out at the former Railroad Depot in Palmer to tell the Assembly and Mayor their thoughts on whether the Assembly should pass a resolution that supports a renewed permit for Usibelli Coal Mine company at Wishbone Hill.

In a 5 to 1 vote, the Assembly adopted an amended resolution that supports the renewal of the permit.

The mayor takes off his work gloves next to the tedder, (hay stirring and spreading machine) and talks about Tuesday night's Assembly meeting, among the topics:

  • the Talkeetna Water & Sewer System rate hike postponement,
  • tax foreclosures,
  • the Point MacKenzie Comprehensive Plan amendment,
  • the authorization to purchase new land for a West Lakes fire station, and
