MAT-SU—Before a crowd at the Palmer Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station Thursday, Matanuska-Susitna Borough Mayor Talis Colberg shared highlights of history on Milton Snodgrass, a visionary in Matanuska agriculture.
In 1929, Snodgrass recruited colonists here on behalf of the railroad. The railroad colonists arrived before the Matanuska federal colony of President Roosevelt, a little-known fact.
Also at the event, Sen. Jay Kerttula was honored with a plaque that officially commemorates a hall named after Kerttula. Alaska Rep. Beth Kerttula and family attended as well as many prominent figures in the agriculture industry.
The University of Alaska Fairbanks held the event to showcase university research. Among the subjects discussed was biomass energy research and development. Dr. Juan Andres Soria told the crowd the nearby lab building had been "off the grid" for three weeks. Instead of running on electricity, the small lab is running on biomass or fuels from diverted energy sources such as trees and canola oil.
Borough Assemblymember Rob Wells, also a former Alaska Director of Agriculture, also attended.
Alaska Lt. Gov. Craig Campbell highlighted Mat-Su agriculture in his speech. "I had the opportunity... to meet with some Chinese who came through here...they talk about natural gas, they talk about fish, and timber. They also talk about produce. They have a large population. They need to heat, they need to provide energy for them. They need to feed them. And what Alaska provides and what they saw as an opportunity for their future rests right here in Palmer, right here in the Valley, right here in Alaska."
